SHELBOURNE 2   BRAY WANDERERS 1

Shelbourne turned the tables on Bray when the sides met for the second time in a week.

Both clubs made extensive changes to their line-ups following their League Cup clash five days earlier.

And though Jason Byrne was to succeed in becoming the League's second highest goal-scorer of all time in the course of the match, it wasn't enough to save the Seagulls from a fifth defeat in seven games.

Philly Hughes opened the scoring with a fine strike ten minutes in, Shels mounting a fierce counter-attack with a surging run by Paddy Kavanagh cutting back to David Cassidy who fed the striker with a neat cross.

"Jayo" made his epic 183rd goal in style on the half hour, fed by Dane Massey up the left, running into the corner and back out again to evade the defence and shooting low with Paul Skinner out of position.

Skinner got his own back, after a fashion, producing a superb dive to turn Byrne's second-half penalty shot onto his left post and away.

And home substitutes Philip Gorman and Anto Murphy combined with Brian Shortall to beat Darren Quigley for what turned out to be the winning goal eight minutes from time.
